What people love about Safari Tours in Kruger National Park
- Johannesburg Adventure Safari 4 Days/3 Nights
The safaris on day one and two were excellent however I would say a few things are not as the itinerary suggests. The drive from johanessburg is not 4 hours, but more like 6-7 hours. Also, day 4 there is no time for a morning safari so this was incorrect too
- Kruger National Park 4D/3N
Well organized tour. God picked up in Jo'burg promptly and all transportation after that was top notch. I also liked that we were staying in the 'original' Kruger Park, and not in one of the many Game Reserves that have sprung up around it. I was fortunate enough to see the Top 5 and loads of other animals. There are 2 long game drives every day. I was a little disappointed that we took the exact same roads almost every time. A change of scenery once in a while would have been nice. The park itself is huge (about the size of Israel), so you'll only be seeing a small part of it, if you only spend a few days there. Since you come into contact with many different employees, it's difficult to get a personal relationship with any of them (for tipping purposes I mean). I ended up giving the game driver I used the most, all my tips, when he had found for me the last of the Big 5. I can highly recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in the wonderful african wildlife!
- Vic Falls to Kruger
Awesome trip but far too many hours on the bus (as specified in the tour details but after free time at the beginning, felt even longer!). All the safari opportunities were amazing. Definitely opt for rafting down the Zambezi! Our driver, Bryce, was great fun. Innocent, our guide, was lovely and a great chef. Take me back!!
What our customers ask about Safari Tours & Trips in Kruger National Park
What's the typical day like on a Kruger safari?
Safari days begin before sunrise usually around 5:30 AM with a light breakfast before heading out for the morning game drive. You'll return to the lodge mid-morning for a full breakfast and some downtime. The afternoon brings opportunities for guided bush walks or relaxation by the pool before setting out for the late afternoon drive around 3:30 PM. The day ends with dinner often served outdoors followed by optional night drives to spot nocturnal animals. As one TourRadar traveler described: "From the morning safari to the evening drives every moment was filled with amazing wildlife experiences."
How do I get to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg?
The journey from Johannesburg to Kruger takes about 5-6 hours by road. Most safari packages include pickup service from O.R. Tambo International Airport or city hotels with departure times between 6:30-9:30 AM. Drivers make regular rest stops at convenient points along the route. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The transfer from Johannesburg was well-organized with regular stops and beautiful scenery along the way."
What wildlife can I expect to see during a safari in Kruger National Park?
Kruger National Park's diverse ecosystems support all members of the Big Five: lions leopards elephants buffalo and rhinos. The park is home to more than 500 bird species 100 reptile species and 150 different mammals. Regular sightings include giraffes zebras hippos and occasionally the rare African wild dog. As one traveler shared: "We saw all the big 5 ate well felt safe and had an absolutely amazing once in a lifetime type guide at Timbavati game lodge!"
How do different safari areas within Kruger National Park compare for wildlife viewing?
The southern region near Crocodile Bridge Gate and Marloth Park has the highest concentration of wildlife particularly the Big Five. Northern Kruger near the Awelani Conservancy offers a more secluded experience with unique landscapes and fewer visitors. According to one TourRadar traveler's review: "The southern Kruger exceeded our expectations with incredible sightings including multiple leopard encounters near Crocodile Bridge." Private reserves such as Sabi Sands and Manyeleti allow off-road driving and typically have fewer vehicles at sightings.
What types of accommodation are available in Kruger National Park and what's included?
Accommodations range from basic camping to high-end luxury lodges. Premium options like Simbavati George Camp on the Nhlaralumi River include all meals game drives and guided activities. Mid-range choices such as Tembo Guest Lodge in Hazyview provide comfortable rooms with breakfast. Many tented camps including Honeyguide Mantobeni come with private bathrooms and viewing decks. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned "accommodation at Simbavati was excellent with great food and amazing views of wildlife right from our deck." Standard inclusions at most lodges cover daily game drives meals and professional rangers.
What is the best time of year to visit Kruger National Park for optimal wildlife viewing?
The dry winter months from May to September provide the clearest wildlife viewing conditions. During this time animals gather around water sources and thinner vegetation improves visibility. Areas like Timbavati Game Reserve and Klaserie Private Nature Reserve offer particularly good sightings of the Big Five. According to TourRadar travelers the early morning drives starting at 5:00 AM are most productive with one reviewer noting "saw the big 5 during the morning drive the guides really know the best spots during different seasons." Lodges like Simbavati George Camp plan their activities around these peak viewing times.
